Get to know your Security Screen Door

Using the correct terminology when asking advice about a security screen door allows us to understand how we can help. Southside Security Doors have made it easy with a glossary of terminology and diagrams showing the different components of a Security Screen Door .

Door Closer - A pneumatic cylinder that controls the speed of the Security Screen Door when it closes and holds the door open when the hold open washer is positioned correctly.

Lock - The lock provides the mechanisms to lock your doors safely. There are 2 two types of locks available, single or triple. A single lock has one locking point at the centre of one side of the Security Screen Door. A triple lock has three locking points connected to an internal rod, one at the top, one in the middle, and one at the bottom.

Handle - this is the part you grab with your hand and turn to disengage the parrot beak and open the Security Screen Door. If the door has been locked by the key or snib the handle will not be able to move.

Release Button - Sometimes known as the trigger switch, it hits the striker plate on the jamb and triggers the lock to engage when the door closes. Unless the release button is fully depressed when hitting the striker it will not trigger the locks to engage.

Parrot Beak - Sometimes called a latch or bolt. This is the part that holds the Security Screen Door closed when it’s locked. It’s a spring-loaded beak that, when triggered by the release button, extends into the door frame when the door is closed preventing it from being opened.

Cylinder or Barrel - The cylinder/ barrel is where you would insert your key to lock or unlock your door. Each cylinder is pinned to fit a key to open the door. Using the key to lock your door one click will snib lock your door two clicks will dead lock your Security Screen Door.

Snib - A snib is a part of the door handle and is used to either lock or unlock the door from the inside.

Strike Plate – A strike plate is mounted on the jamb for the parrot beak to lock into.

Jamb - The Jamb is the frame that surrounds the Security Screen Door in the doorway.Parts of hinged single lock
